Review: iFlight Succex F4 Micro 16x16mm FC/ESC/VTX Stack

by Oscar

Looking for a nano 16x16mm flight controller stack for your next micro quad? Check out the iFlight Succex F4 Micro Stack which has been around long enough to prove itself a reliable option.

It’s a 16x16mm FC stack, which in comparison to a full size (30.5×30.5mm) or even a mini size (20x20mm) stack, it looks ridiculously small! That is great for micro quads in terms of form factor as well as weight saving.

Where to Buy?

In the box there are:

  • SucceX F4 Micro FC
  • 12A 4in1 ESC
  • (optional) 200mW VTX
  • XT30 battery lead (18AWG, 8cm)
  • Dipole VTX antenna (8cm)
  • FPV Camera cable (10cm)

Closer Look at the Micro Stack

Over the months, iFlight experimented with different types of bolts, nuts, and soft-mounting material, finally settled with what we see today. The total weight of the stack is only 9.2g including screws and nuts.

The height of the stack including VTX is about 20mm, or 16mm without the VTX board.

There are three boards in this stack, from top to bottom, are the 200mW VTX, F4 FC and a 12A 4in1 ESC. Here is a close up of the top side of every board.

And the bottom side:

Bottom Side

As you can see the solder pads are quite small and requires good soldering skills.

Not a single wire to be seen in this stack.

The connection between boards are made by tiny header pins, which in my opinion, might be counterproductive in terms of soft-mounting. But it is indeed a very clean solution. If you prefer silicon wires for connection between boards, check out the Diatone Mamba Nano Stack.

Here are the specifications of each board:

Notes

Here is the pin-out diagram (wiring diagram) of the iFlight F4 Micro FC Stack.

According to the manual, by bridging the tiny solder pads as shown in the above diagram, bypasses the “built-in” inverter for RX2. You should bridge these pads if you are using “non-inverted” radio protocols such as DSMX and Crossfire. For Frsky SBUS, just leave the pads un-bridged.

There are not enough UART on this board for you to run SmartPort telemetry (only two UART’s available), assuming you are using 1 UART for VTX control (tramp) and the other for SBUS. The only way to get Frsky Telemetry is to run FPort. In CLI, set serialrx_inverted = on, set serialrx_halfduplex=off.

UART1 is reserved for VTX Control (IRC Tramp). It’s not broken out to a solder pad and the only connection is via the head pin connector, so accessing it for something else isn’t going to be easy.

There is a V2 of this micro stack (product page: http://bit.ly/2KwdsKy), but really, the differences are minimal and you can save a few dollars getting the V1. Here is a summary of the differences:

  • Slightly larger 5V BEC (2A vs. 3A) – 2A is enough for the most part unless you are powering an HD camera like the Runcam Split off the FC
  • Flash Memory for Blackbox logging – rarely used
  • Motor Connectors on 4in1 ESC – I do hope that they could leave these connectors not soldered to the board and let people choose whether to use them or not

I believe they made the V2 mainly for the pre-built models, like the Turbobee 120RS and 136RS.

what is the pin out for the vtx?

I purchased the turbobee 136R kit from pyrodrone. It comes with the V2 version of this stack. I’m finding that even on supposedly 25mw power, the VTX overheats and shuts down in 20-30 seconds if you are not actively flying.

i have tried multiple configs of the power levels trying to ensure that it is only putting out 25mw but it still overheats.

Am having same problem with VTX Overheat, even when lowering it to 25mw

The default BF settings from a new firmware flash shows 4-5 times the normal battery consumption. Looking around the web there’s next to nothing available manual-wise for this Stack and nothing about the current sensor. (Looking at you iFlight)

Anyone know what are the correct ADC settings for the current sensor?

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

If it’s 4 times higher, you just need to increase the current sensor scale by 4 times?

Dear Oscar,

I’m using this micro stack but I’m replaced the vtx with panda nano vtx. Based on iflight diagram, I need to use LED pad for telemetry and remap it.
After doing this, my current status in BF video tx was not ready. However, I still can change setting in vtx table and OSD. Any idea on this issue?

Hey Oscar. I got an unused Succex F4 Micro stack from a friend, still new in the box. I checked the FC as soon as I got it, worked fine. I reflashed to the suggested target Stm32f411, but it wouldn’t do anything. Then I saw your article that says it’s MatekF411, is this the original version? Also I’ve never been able to get Blheli to read esc 1 and 2. Even ordered a new 4in1, and same thing. Do you think the signal pins are bad on the FC or could this be a FW problem? The pins look fine and seat completely. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don’t know what version you have, or if they’ve changed firmware target in newer versions.
Maybe best to check with iFlight.

Thanks Oscar
I have a V1.5 . I was really struggling to get telemetry and VTX was impossible to set with the button, but you got me on the right track. First I switched over to F Port and I got telemetry , then was able to get Betaflight OSD to set the VTX .
serialrx_inverted, and serialrx_halfduplex set to on worked for me. Also dedicated pad for FPort telemetry wire near the corner of the USB connector rT2 not the Tx 2 pad on that version. Always fun !!

Is there any internet resourse for a VTX table? I’m a little lost trying to work out what does and doesn’t work… Cant seem to find a table for this particular VTX anywhere. Or can i just use the bog standard TRAMP JSON file from github, and just adjust power settings?

Yes, just use the tramp file, or you can check out this tutorial How to Get SmartAudio Tramp VTX Control Working in Betaflight 4.1 with VTXTables

I have v2.1 of this fc and have r-xsr running fport using uart 2. I’m trying to get Smart Audio to work for the TBS Unify Pro32 nano on the LED pad with no success. Iflight says to remap LED pad to soft serial 1 but when I map it to soft serial 1 i lose the fc startup tone and lose rx function. I’m stumped. Please help

Do you know the pinout of the pin header on the fc to vtx?

Reply
Wayne Patterson 25th December 2019 - 9:22 pm

Just been told by iflight customer support this FC does no support telemetry, trying F. Port but only get signal one way, not bi directional.

By simply enable SoftSerial and put it on the TX2 pad with “resource SERIAL_TX 11 (tx2 pin number)”, set it in the port tab (soft serial 1). Telemetry is now working (set tlm_halfduplex = ON/OFF if isn’t working) .

Any luck getting telemetry on F Port working with telemetry? Using an R-XSR I can get stick movement but no telemetry, wiring diagram looks like you don’t need to hack the inverted sport pad but its looking that way…

I just ordered the V1 because I didn’t want the connectors for motors. I also ordered it without the VTX because the u.fl connector is DEAD TO ME! I can’t remember ever NOT having that POS connector fail on me in some way! I HATE IT! I’m a big believer in your Oscar’s Backpack, so I will be using that “close to perfect” VTX. The only thing that could possibly be improved on it is to add more power settings. Maybe a V2 can do it? The MMCX rules! ?
Be using it for a micro toothpick with the GnarlyFPV 080x frame!
Thanks Oscar for all you do to better the hobby! ?
