A dead car battery is a frustrating situation—especially if you don’t own a dedicated automotive charger. I recently found myself stuck with a drained car battery that wouldn’t crank the engine. Without access to a dedicated car battery charger, I decided to use my RC LiPo charger, since many modern models support Pb (lead-acid) batteries as well. It worked surprisingly well, and I’ll show you exactly how I did it in this tutorial.

What You’ll Need
- A LiPo charger that supports Pb (lead-acid) batteries, for example:
- XT60 (female) to alligator clips cable – for connecting to the car battery terminals, buy it here

- A large battery to power your charger (if you don’t have AC power available or your charger doesn’t support AC). Car batteries are big (30–70Ah) and need a lot of energy to recover if deeply drained.

Step 1: Measure the Battery Voltage
Before charging, check the car battery’s voltage with your multimeter to get an idea. If the battery shows a healthy voltage but still can’t crank the engine, the issue maybe something else.
In my case, the battery was just under 11V, and it wasn’t enough to start the car.
A quick google reveals that a typical car battery should read around 12.6–12.8V when the engine is off, and up to 14.4V when the engine is running. That’s why I will try to charge my battery to 12.6V. Keep in mind that the voltage will drop slightly after you stop charging, so you will probably need to charge slightly higher than that.
Step 2: Configure Charging Parameters
- Power on charger.
- Select Pb (lead-acid) battery type.
- Cell Count: For a 12V car battery, choose 6S Pb (2V per cell × 6 = 12V).
- Charge Current: Use 0.1C (I searched and most people recommend 0.1C so that’s what I am gonna use). My car battery is a 50Ah, 0.1C that would be 5A.
Step 3: Connect Charger to Car Battery
Attach the XT60-to-alligator clip cable. Clip red to + (positive), black to – (negative) on the car battery.
You might see a spark when hooking up the cable, which is normal as long as the polarity is correct.
Step 4: Charging the Battery
- Start charging and keep an eye on the current and voltage on your charger’s display.
- Depending on how your charger works, the process should look something like this:
- The current ramps up gradually over the first minute.
- It then delivers a steady current until the battery approaches its full voltage (~14.4V).
- The current then tapers off into a trickle charge as the battery tops off.
However, in my case, I let it charge for about 30 minutes and manually stopped at around 13V. After resting, the voltage dropped to slightly over 12V (which is normal), and the car started without any problem.
Important Safety Notes
- Don’t fast charge. Lead-acid batteries prefer slow charging. Stick to 0.1C to be safe.
- Do not over-discharge your input battery (if using a LiPo to power the charger) – regularly monitor both input and output voltages.

Conclusion
If you’re in a pinch, an RC LiPo charger that supports Pd battery type can rescue an empty battery in your car or motorcycle. It’s not a replacement for a dedicated automotive charger, but it’s a great emergency hack and might save you on the spot when you don’t have any professional tools— especially for RC hobbyists who already own a capable LiPo charger.

Hey Oscar, don’t use the negative contact of the car battery to charge it, because you bypass the BCM of modern cars.
If it’s an “old” one <2009 that it's okay, but afterwards all cars with AGM batterys have a BCM, that monitor the status and doesnt like it if it's bypassed.
I did the same last winter. Normally I use a solar panel to charge 12V batteries. But when the sun is not shining, it helps.
If you’re using a 6S LiIon as a power source you could set the “Minimum input voltage” to something like 6*3.5V = 21V and that would protect your LiIon from over-discharging.
