Review: Walksnail Avatar GT VTX Kit – A Powerhouse for Long-Range FPV

by Oscar
Walksnail Avatar Gt Vtx Kit

Walksnail has recently released a new video transmitter, the Avatar GT VTX, boasting the highest transmission power in their lineup. With a maximum output of 2 watts, it’s designed for long-range flights and comes equipped with a cooling fan—a feature particularly beneficial for maintaining performance in hot conditions. In this review, I’ll dive into its features and share my thoughts on this product based on user experience.

First Impression

Upon unboxing the Avatar GT VTX Kit, the first thing that strikes you is its size. This unit is significantly larger and taller than previous models, primarily due to the built-in cooling fan designed to handle the increased power output.

The overall build quality feels robust, with the main VTX housing made from sturdy aluminum, complemented by a cooling fan sitting on top.

The included Avata Pro camera is capable of 1080p resolution, although it lacks the 4K capabilities found in the Moonlight camera. It does, however, support Gyroflow, which is a significant advantage for stabilized footage, which can be stored on a micro SD card up to 256GB.

On one side of the VTX, there’s a familiar connector plug similar to the one found on the Avata V1 VTX. Next to it, there are 5V and GND pads that are already occupied and protected with liquid electrical tape, specifically for powering the 5V cooling fan.

On the other side, you’ll find the bind button, the SD card slot, and a status LED.

On the bottom, there are various screw holes accommodating different mounting patterns such as 20x20mm and 25.5×25.5mm.

Installation and Setup Challenges

The Avatar GT VTX measures 34x34x23.5mm. When installing it in my SourceOne V5 frame, it felt like it was designed specifically for it—the 20x20mm extruded screw holes on the VTX fit perfectly onto the bottom plate, and the frame’s height matches the VTX perfectly. However, its bulkiness could pose a challenge for frames with limited space.

A notable design choice is the friction-fit SD card slot. Unlike a standard latching SD card slot, once you insert the SD card, removing it seems impossible, which would probably require disassembling the VTX. To mitigate this, Caddx includes adhesive tapes to attach to the back of your SD card, making removal easier. While functional, this workaround is a step backward in usability, and it’s something to keep in mind during setup. They provided 8 stickers so should be plenty for most people.

Another challenge is the antenna setup. While the antennas are pre-installed, the UFL connectors are located in tricky spots, making the process of attaching and removing antennas cumbersome, especially in a compact setup. This can be particularly frustrating if you’re mounting the VTX in a tight space, such as inside a plane fuselage.

Compatibility and Setup

Despite some quirks mentioned above, the Walksnail Avatar GT VTX offers compelling features. It’s compatible with all Walksnail cameras, as well as the Moonlight Camera and Recording Unit for those who wish to record in 4K.

Using the Avata GT feels just like using any other VTX from Walksnail—the binding, configuration, and firmware update processes are nearly identical. You can find detailed instructions on how to do this in my tutorial: https://oscarliang.com/setup-avatar-fpv-system/

Who Is the Avatar GT VTX For?

The Walksnail GT VTX is designed for specific use cases, particularly long-range, high-power applications where other VTXs might struggle. It’s not something I’d recommend for everyday use on a typical 5-inch build, but for those who need the extra power for extended-range flights, it’s a strong contender.

Note that the GT is physically larger and heavier than most standard VTXs, making it less suitable for lightweight 5-inch or smaller builds. Instead, it’s better suited for larger drones, like 7-inch or 10-inch FPV drones, planes, or even ground-based vehicles where size and weight are less of a concern.

Final Thoughts

Walksnail Avatar Gt Vtx Kit

The Walksnail Avatar GT VTX Kit offers enhanced range and penetration, making it a solid choice for those looking to push the limits of their FPV flights. However, be prepared for a bit of extra work and planning during the installation process, and keep in mind that it’s not the best choice for lightweight builds or flying in environments with other pilots due to its high power output and potential for RF interference.

Excellent review. Damn shame it doesn’t record 4k natively. Caddx website very ambiguous saying it os 4K DVR compatible. If you want an entertaining argument with AI… Currently deciding between the GT and the Moonlight or Pro HD for use with the Flightory Stallion 3D printed UAV. Thanks for the heads up!! :)

Does it mean, when you connect the Moonlight Cam to the GT Air Unit, it will record in 4k?
If yes, then changing from DJI to Walksnail is really an Option :-)

No, the GT Air Unit (VTX) itself only records 1080p. You will need the Moonlight recording module to record 4K.
