Expresslrs 4.0 Firmware Release Update New Web Ui Configurator Interface

ExpressLRS 4.0 is finally here. This is a major update with meaningful improvements in performance, flexibility, and reliability—but it also introduces important compatibility changes you need to understand before upgrading. If your current setup is working perfectly, you may not need to upgrade. But if some of the new features and improvements are appealing to you, make sure to backup your config before proceeding.

Not Compatible with Older Versions

If you install ExpressLRS 4.0, it will NOT work with:

  • Devices still running ELRS 3.x, 2.x, or 1.x
  • Older STM32-based hardware, including:

You must update both your transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) to V4 for them to connect. They will not communicate otherwise.

Doesn’t Work with SPI Receivers (Yet?)

Some AIO flight controllers used in whoops have built-in SPI receivers. These are still running ELRS 3.x code and will not work with V4 yet.

Since SPI ELRS firmware is integrated into Betaflight, support depends on a Betaflight update first.

There is no mention in the 4.0 release note that SPI receivers are being abandoned, so I presume it’s only temporary. If you are using SPI receivers, do not update to ExpressLRS 4.0 yet.

What’s New in ExpressLRS 4.0

Get the full release note here: https://github.com/ExpressLRS/ExpressLRS/releases. Here’s a summary.

Choose Your Own Arming Switch

Previously, Channel 5 had to be used for the arm switch.

Now:

  • With the alternative arming method, you can assign a specific switch for arming.
  • Channel 5 becomes a normal usable channel again.
  • Setup is more flexible and convenient.
  • Requires EdgeTX 2.11.0 or higher

Better Dynamic Power

ExpressLRS now uses a smarter algorithm for dynamic power.

This means:

  • Power adjusts more intelligently.
  • Your signal stays strong without constantly blasting maximum output.
  • Better battery life on your radio.
  • More stable Link Quality (LQ) when using dynamic power.

Automatic Antenna Mode

Before, you had to manually select antenna modes (Gemini, Ant1, Ant2, Switch).

Now, the transmitter and receiver figure it out automatically. No more guessing or manual adjustments—it just works.

What’s Gemini Mode? https://oscarliang.com/expresslrs-gemini/

Full Power DJI Air Unit Without a Flight Controller

This is a big one for fixed wing users who don’t use a flight controller.

It’s known that DJI air units don’t use full power when it doesn’t detect an arm signal (even though when power is set to max). ExpressLRS receivers can now send an arm signal directly to DJI Air Units to trigger full transmission power—no flight controller required.

Faster Telemetry

Telemetry is the data your drone sends back (battery voltage, GPS, signal strength etc).

V4 improvements:

  • Telemetry speed is faster.
  • Data transfer is more reliable.
  • “Sensor Lost” warnings are reduced.

When using Gemini mode, telemetry bandwidth is nearly doubled.

New Web Interface (WebUI)

The configuration webpage has been redesigned:

  • Cleaner layout
  • Easier to use
  • Better organized

Functionality remains similar—just more polished and user-friendly.

Expanded Servo & Output Options (Advanced Users)

For pilots using PWM receivers or special setups:

  • Wider servo output range (500–2500µs)
  • Expanded failsafe range
  • DSHOT 3D support
  • More packet modes (especially for LR1121 hardware)

If you don’t know what these are — you probably don’t need them

Lua Script Change

You should also update the ExpressLRS LUA script in your radio.

The lua script is now called: elrs.lua

Delete older versions such as:

  • elrsV3.lua
  • elrsV3.luac

This prevents duplicate ExpressLRS tools from appearing on your radio.

Important: Settings May Be Wiped When Upgrading

Upgrading to V4 changes the internal filesystem. As a result, changed settings in WebUI may be erased.

You should back up your configuration before updating. To do this, download the hardware.json file from the webUI before updating and then replaced after updating.

Final Thoughts: Should You Update?

ExpressLRS 4.0 is a major update with significant improvements and new features. However, it also breaks compatibility with older firmware versions and certain hardware (such as STM32-based devices, and SPI receivers for now).

Before upgrading:

  • Make sure your hardware is supported.
  • Back up your current configuration.
  • Update both TX and RX together.

If your current setup works perfectly and none of the new features are essential to you, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. Keep flying and avoid hassle. If you decide to update, do it carefully—and make sure everything is compatible first.

Do you know if Radiomaster TX15 Max will support it?

Just bought a Cetus X HD drone with Betaflight built in Rx, updated the drone to latest on betaflight and it won’t bind to my Radiomaster TX15 on ELRS 4.0

I think the latest official Betaflight Release only support ELRS 3.0 for SPI receivers. 4.0 support is coming in the new release in June. But for now you can try the pre-release version if you cannot wait. Or you can flash your radio back to ELRS 3.x for now.

Whats about the Betaflight LQ-OSD “LQ23:100”?
I only know Numbers til 13, which means F1000 (1000Hz).
Has there something change, i couldn`t find Documentation about this.
Thanks, happy flyin`

I fly quads, including some spi whoops. Heli’s (shoutout to Rotorflight) & planes. Both heli’s & planes with & without FC’s. A diverse messy fleet of frsky, elrs, spektrum, futaba receivers that requires flexibility. I decided years ago that a radio with built in ELRS seemed like a quick path to having an obsolete radio. So, I went with a 4 in 1 internal and an external ELRS module. 4 comes along with compelling features for fixed wing but an upgrade breaks all my spi whoops. Just bought an el cheapo ELRS module. Old one runs 3 and the new one 4. Slightly altered the new lua script so I can distinguish the 3 & 4 lua. All good. BTW: I like ELRS but I wish radiomaster, jumper etc still made new radio models with built in 4 in 1 modules. Radiomaster seemed to have stopped after the boxer & MT12.

I meant I have the Radio Master TX16 coming some day soon.

Did the upgrade to 4.0 was excited. Upgraded my 2 nexus xr receivers, Great
Then today I charge up my batteries for my goosky s1 and s2 using elrs mini radios.

To my surprise they wouldn’t connect, or bind. spent a fair amount of time at the school field, then researched it at home, and then re-read the not comparable with older 3.? receivers.
Damn. I have the new radiomaster tx15max coming some day soon, so I guess when that happens, the tx15max I recently bought will become my goosky little heli transmitter.

And thanks Radiomaster for making me buy the 15, only to have the 16 come out a bit after lol

From the looks of these Betaflight support issues #14919 and #14932 SPI won’t be supported very much longer.

I have the CH5 “arm switch” set to turn on/off my VTX. Upgraded to ELRS 4.0, changed to arm with SE switch and CH5 VTX on/off didn’t work anymore. Also LQ on the OSD now reads “24:100” instead of “5:100” as it did before. I reverted back to 3.6.3.

You need to read the documentation man, a lot has changed.
You need to be in “full res” switch mode to use CH5 for other things intead of arm.
The number in link quality OSD has changed: https://www.expresslrs.org/info/signal-health/?h=osd

testing the new arm switch functionality, when i select to arm via switch and testing in betaflight it now arm is using channel 5 and 14?? couldnt find a way to use channel 5 to other thing

harro 13th February 2026 - 12:23 am

i have the same happening

Reply
Nicolas 14th February 2026 - 9:25 pm

the new arm switch only works in full res packet modes, i should have read the full readme 3 times haha

Nicolas 14th May 2026 - 7:24 pm

revisiting this, last statement is correct but there are alternatives for 12 ch wide switch configuration modes. its possible to use a logical condition to arm , that way you can use channel 5 while not using full res packet mode .

what im not sure in that case is if the logical switch has priority in the radio transmitter cpu loop like channel 5 does??
