Review: Jumper T16 Pro Hall Radio

by Oscar

When I was wondering why Jumper took down the product page for the T16, I discovered they are about to release a new radio – the Jumper T16 Pro.

Just to clear up confusions about the different T16 names and versions.

The “T16 Plus” with upgraded Hall gimbals was released following the original T16. But shortly after Jumper decided to integrate the external RF module inside the radio, and released the “T16 Pro” to replace the original T16, and “T16 Pro Hall” to replace the “T16 Plus“.

All of these happened within 6 months, so it’s been a bit of a mess.

There are now only two versions, both have internal RF module, they no longer offer the external module with the T16. And prices stay the same.

See my review of the original T16 here.

Where to Buy T16 Pro?

Due to pressure from Frsky, many vendors are forced not to sell the Jumper T16. Amazon seems to be the best place to get them.

I am going to give away the original T16 on my forum next week: IntoFPV.com

Differences Between Original T16, T16 Pro, and T16 Pro Hall

Jumper integrated the multi-protocol RF module inside the radio, to free up the external module bay for your favourite module such as the TBS Crossfire.

Jumper T16 Pro Hall with Crossfire, internal RF module

With the T16 Pro Hall, you have Hall Sensor Gimbals. You won’t be able to tell the difference from the outside, both hall gimbals and potentiometer gimbals look the same.

Jumper T16 Pro Hall and Orignial

The hall gimbals feel slightly more solid and smooth, something you can tell immediately when moving the sticks. Also hall gimbals is known to last longer because the sensor doesn’t have mechanical contact.

The price difference is only $10, I would recommend spending the extra and get the T16 Pro Hall.

Here is the internal of the original T16, notice the potentiometer in the gimbal, and the missing RF chip on the internal module.

Original T16 Internal

Here is the internal of the T16 Pro Hall.

Also they’ve added the middle wire to the balance lead of the battery holder, so you can plug the holder directly to the parallel charging board to charge the batteries using this trick (without discharge lead).

The rest of the specs and features are identical as far as I know.

  • Powered by STM32F429BIT6 MCU
  • Input Voltage: Voltage: 7V – 8.4V
  • Current Consumption: 350mA without external module
  • Dimension: 180*190*58mm
  • Weight: around 860g

Features:

  • STM32F429BIT6 MC
  • Industrial grade 4.3 inch 480×272 outdoor readable colour screen
  • Compatible with JumperTX (An independent fork of OpenTX)
  • Wheel menu button
  • Gimbal Type: HALL SENSOR
  • Internal Multi-protocol transmitter module
  • External module bay supports TBS Crossfire and R9M
  • Removable battery
  • Supports Telemetry
  • Memory 16M (can be expanded by Micro SD card)
  • Voice function
  • Vibration reminder function
  • Standard JR module slot
  • 6-Flight Mode Buttons (for APM and Pixhawk flight controllers)
  • Two-colour LED status display

Upgrading Old T16 to Pro Version

Already bought the original T16? Don’t worry.

You can buy the Hall Sensor Gimbals to upgrade your radio. I think it’s a good move on Jumper’s part so the early birds don’t feel left out.

You can also buy the internal RF module kit and install it yourself.

OpenTX Support

As I announced on my Facebook page back in September, OpenTX will support the T16 officially soon (might be version 2.3.2). The main concern I had with the Jumper T16 was the firmware, JumperTX. Although it’s basically the same as OpenTX, but it was up to the company to provide firmware updates which is unreliable. It’s amazing news that the community will have full control of the firmware in the future.

Update (Jan 2020): you can now flash OpenTX to the T16!

Better Than Taranis X9D+?

Frsky recently released a new version of the X9D+, the Taranis X9D+ 2019. Funny enough, they also put a scrolling wheel next to the screen like the T16 :)

As I mentioned in the review of the original T16, I still feel like the X9D+ has slightly better ergonomics for pinchers. The grip is more solid and I can just pick up and hold the radio. However with the T16 I had to use a neck strap all the time. However this is not a problem for thumbers.

The level of build quality is similar, giving the T16 Pro an edge in terms of value. You are basically getting the features of an Horus X10 for the price of an QX7. And the built-in RF module supports multi protocols which is truly powerful! The new Frsky ACCESS protocol no longer supports D8 mode which is used in a lot of micro quads, so if you buy a new Taranis today, you will run into troubles flying D8.

If you want a more in-depth analysis, I explained the good and bad of the X9D Plus compared to the T16 in my review, you should check it out.

First Time Setup

How to setup T16 for the first time when you receive it.

Frequency Tuning

One of the downsides with the multi-protocol module is that you have to fine tune the frequency in order to maximize range. If you are getting bad range it’s probably you forgot to fine tune it.

How to Adjust Gimbal Tension

It’s really cool that Jumper left some holes on the back of the housing, so you can adjust the gimbal tensions without tearing the radio down. See the following photo for instructions:

Adjust T16 gimbal tension for roll, pitch and yaw

Adjust T16 gimbal tension for roll, pitch and yaw

However you only have access to Roll, Pitch and Yaw tensions, if you want to adjust throttle tension, and ratchet you still have to take the radio apart.

Edit History

  • Jul 2019 – T16 Plus announced
  • Sep 2019 – T16 Plus changed to T16 Pro Hall
  • Oct 2019 – Added more info on the T16 Pro hall

Mr. Oscar,
I bought a new Jumper T16 Pro Hall, direct from China, in Ali express site. This was in December 2019. I received the radio on February 2020, about first week. After using the transmitter for two weeks without problem, I get an issue, the button page stops to scroll over the top menu. I get the beep, but the cursor do not move on menu. Then, was impossible to program the model.
I try to change the firmware in SD Card and the problem was not solved. Actually, when I start the radio I get the voice mensagem, “error” and on display the mensagem “SD Card Warning Expected version 2.3 V0023 Press any key.
Is there some procedure to solve this problem?
The transmitter continue to work, the SD Card is OK, I can create a new model, bind the receiver, but nothing about programming.
Some help?

Try to update OpenTX firmware following my guide, maybe you didn’t copy the right SD card content.

Could you please clarify if the Frsky R9M (2019 version) module will work with the T16 Pro Hall radio and if so, which firmware should be installed (Flex or older non-Access), etc?

Reply
Oscar 3rd January 2020 - 2:50 pm

I haven’t tried it so I cannot comment on the issue, and I also don’t recommend the R9M module given its history and bad reputation at this point. Go for Crossfire instead.

Where is the ratchet adjustment and throttle tension adjustment? I can’t find any info on where that is.

Hi Oscar, just wondering if these remote has Access protocol software installed already? I have the Pro version and it’s opentx 2.3.2. I used to have the Frsky X-Lite S access and the flashed all my receivers to Access, now I’m wondering if they work on this controller or is there any way to download the access protocol and install it into this unit?

Reply
Oscar 21st December 2019 - 4:47 am

No, Access is Frsky’s protocol, only Frsky’s latest transmitters support ACCESS at this moment.
If you want to use the T16 Pro with Frsky’s receiver, you’d have to flash them back to an older non-ACCESS firmware

Where did you get the information that FrSky is bullying vendors into not selling Jumper? Which vendors?

Reply

Frsky made an announcement a while back.

I just bought a brand new t16 and I was planning on using my lotus sticks on it off of my Taranis, but they won’t fit. Much smaller threading. I can’t find anything online as to what size they are. Do you know? Really like flying with lotus sticks, just need to know what size to order! Thanks in advance for your reply!

Do you know what switch nuts we can use to replace the existing ones? Also, what about the pot knobs?

I just received my T16 from Hobby-Wing and though it was supposed to be the Pro it has an external module. The “T16” is in silver instead of red which is supposed to indicate the Pro. Instead of sending it back and waiting another month or so to get it shipped back can I take the RF module out of the external module and place it inside? Or is it a different board all together?

Reply
Oscar 6th November 2019 - 8:06 pm

no, but you can order the DIY kit to install the internal RF module.

do I have to update firmware on the jumper t16 pro or does it come already installed

Reply
Oscar 22nd October 2019 - 3:10 pm

I don’t think it’s necessary to update, I’d probably wait until the official OpenTX firmware for the T16 is out, V2.3.2 I’ve heard.

Does the T16 support all 4 different stick modes? I fly using Stick mode 3
Thanks..

Yes, you can just adjust the gimbals yourself

How good are the emulated protocols?
I never read how good they are, They are reversed engineered protocols so for the most still different from the original but working, but how good? For those cheap, nearby ‘toys’ I have no problem with it but will you use this on your $1000 model?

Very interesting product!
Do you happen to know whether the unit has a CE marking and a declaration of conformity?

It now looks as if the remote control will soon be available in Germany as well. Look already when I can finally order it, I am already quite curious just because of the color display.
In Germany I have finally discovered the spark. Delivery date is probably 14.10.19 at the CopterFarm. copterfarm.de/team-blacksheep-tbs-jumper-t16-pro-hall-fpv-fernsteuerung-847.html

Just received one yesterday. Feels great, was able to set one module up with my CRSF. However, the options on the internal/ external modules in the menu are a little confusing. I assume the multi module is still use as an external to be able to use frsky and spektrum vs internal even thought the bay is not used?

I was a QX7 / R9 user. After a bad batch of R9MM receivers (FrSky verified this to me via an email conversation I had with them) , I have sworn off FrSky. Slowly getting my fleet converted over to Crossfire. 5 birds done, 9 to go. ;). I like the Jumper T16. It’s a solid performer. It is different, but not in a bad way. I’m a pincher, but I have always used a neck strap anyway, so no big deal for me. I love the big color screen, and the Jumper TX software has some nice features.
